Frequently Asked Questions
Event Liability FAQ

How do I get spectator event liability or accident coverage for my event?

Complete the appropriate application and submit on line or print off, and fax/mail to SPI. Payment must be remitted to SPI in the form of Cashier's check, money order or Western Union prior to the date of the event.

How far ahead do I need to apply for coverage before my event?

Ideally we request 14 days prior to the event. Please be aware that sometimes facilities; sanctioning organizations or sponsors will require a certificate 30 days prior to the event. We can not issue a certificate until we have received completed, acceptable application and payment.

Who is covered under the policy?

Our Full Rodeo policy form provides coverage for the rodeo committee/event organizer as a named insured. Stock Contractors and Event promoters can be added as named insured for no additional cost by request. In addition, landowners, sanctioning organizations; sponsors, volunteers, and participants are all covered as Additional Insured’s under the policy if a claim is brought against them for an incident which occurred at your event.

Is there a charge to add someone as an Additional Insured?

There is no charge to add an Additional Insured. Land owners, sanctioning organizations, and sponsors are automatically added. All other requests must be approved prior to adding. No additional insureds can be added to a Stock Contractors only policy.

What limits of liability are available?

Our program offers a $1,000,000 per occurrence/$2,000,000 aggregate limit of liability or a $500,000 per occurrence/$1,000,000 aggregate. Please review any contracts you have signed for the event to be sure your insurance requirements for the contract are being met. Higher Limits of Liability are available; please call 800-338-3313 for a quote.

What is the difference between Full Rodeo coverage and Stock Contractor Only coverage?

Full Rodeo coverage provides third party spectator liability for the entire event, and will protect the rodeo committee, stock contractor, promoter, landowner and sanctioning organization. Additional Insureds can be added to this policy. Stock Contractor Only coverage provides coverage when the rodeo committee or event coordinator has purchased coverage for the event but requires the Stock Contractor to provide their own coverage. Stock Contractor Only does not provide coverage for anyone but the Stock Contractor and no Additional Insureds can be added to this policy.

How can I properly protect my volunteers?

Third party liability is provided under the Event Spectator liability for any claims or suits that are brought against your volunteers for Bodily Injury or Property Damage that they may have caused to a spectator in the course of working at your event. We also offer Volunteer Accident Coverage which provides coverage for Accidental Death, Dismemberment and Accident Excess Medical coverage for the volunteer. This will help to off-set out of pocket expenses a volunteer may have if they are injured while working at your event. The limits available for this coverage are normally $5,000, $10,000 or $25,000. Please see the “Get Covered” section for applications and pricing.

What types of events will your program cover?

SPI provides event coverage for Rodeos, Bull Riding Events, Livestock Shows, Horse Shows, Horse Expos, Livestock sales/auctions, Timed events (barrel racing, ropings, cuttings, etc), gymkhanas/play days and mutton bustin. We provide coverage for most rodeo, livestock and equine events. If your event is not listed above, please call to see if we are able to provide coverage for your activity.

What do I do if I have a claim?

In the event of a claim, you will need to collect pertinent information regarding the claim or incident, including date, time, location, description of incident, name and contact information of any injured parties and witnesses. You should then call our office as soon as possible at 800-338-3313 to report the claim. A Claims Adjuster will be assigned to your claim and will advise you on how to proceed.

I am holding a sanctioned Rodeo; do my contestants have coverage through their sanctioning organization?

Several sanctioning organizations provide the members with Contestant Accident coverage in their membership. This coverage will typically provide accident coverage to the contestants while they are competing in a sanctioned event. Please check with your sanctioning organization to see if coverage is provided.
